I'm The Cool Auntie
This video features Morgen Arguelles reflecting on what it means to be an auntie during the early years of her nephew’s life. She describes the joy of being a playful, supportive presence—setting loving boundaries while encouraging fun and exploration. The story also honors a wider network of aunties who show up in different ways, illustrating how shared care and humor shape a strong family support system.
to me, being an auntie right now means being present during my nephew’s toddler years. He’s still very young, so I get to watch him grow and be his playmate. I felt very happy for my sister, even though she became a mom at a young age, because I knew my sisters and our whole family would be there to support her—she has plenty of babysitters.
The kind of auntie I am now will be different as my nephew gets older, but right now I’m definitely the “cool auntie.” Silas just turned two and is in his terrible twos, but we understand that he’s just a kid having fun, so I support that by having fun with him. I let him explore and enjoy himself while still setting boundaries, especially when something could be dangerous.
