BIOGRAPHY
Mai Yee is a Hmong singer, songwriter, and performer whose music is rooted in healing, resilience, and the courage to speak truth through art. Born and raised in a household marked by domestic violence and emotional turmoil, Mai Yee grew up grappling with social anxiety, bullying, and the lasting impacts of trauma. For years, she remained quiet, often afraid to speak up or advocate for herself.
It was during her early college years that music became a lifeline. In the privacy of her bedroom, she began singing daily to manage her anxiety and depression. This quiet ritual soon turned into something transformative when close friends, moved by the power of her voice, encouraged her to share it publicly. She took a leap of faith and performed in her college’s Hmong student organization talent show. That first performance marked the beginning of her journey toward self-expression and confidence.
As she gained experience performing at community events, Mai Yee discovered that her voice could be more than a personal outlet—it could serve as a tool for collective healing. Drawing from her own experiences, she began writing songs that tackled themes often left unspoken in the Hmong community: generational trauma, mental health, and emotional pain. In 2019, she released her debut rap single, "Sorry Mom", a deeply personal reflection on family, forgiveness, and emotional wounds. This was followed in 2020 by "Depression," a candid and powerful track that resonated with many who struggle in silence.
Mai Yee's work serves as a call for openness, compassion, and healing within her community. Her mission is to use music as a bridge—to break cycles of blame and shame, and to encourage others, especially young Hmong people, to speak their truths and seek help without fear. As an artist and advocate, she continues to grow her platform with vulnerability, strength, and a message of hope.
