Mai yee Chang
BIOGRAPHY
Growing up Mai Yee struggled with social anxiety and suffered from bullying and family domestic violence. It shaped her into becoming a person who was quiet, and afraid to speak and stand up for herself. As she began her college years, Mai yee started singing everyday in her bedroom to cope with her depression and anxiety. One day, some of Mai Yee's friends heard her singing and were amazed by her voice. They encouraged her to sign up and participate in her college Hmong student organization talent shows. She did. And that was when she began to slowly build the courage to sing in front of crowds. That became her way of using her voice to speak up as she performed songs about heartbreaks, hope and inspiration. She began performing at community events as well.
As a Hmong artist, Mai Yee knows that the Hmong community is in need of healing from generational trauma. Mental health is rarely talked about within Hmong families, with many stuck in the toxic cycle of blaming, shaming and abusing instead of focusing on the root problem of mental and emotional health. That is why Mai Yee's mission is to write and share music to her community about traumas, mental and emotional struggles and getting help.
In 2019, Mai Yee released her first rap song called, "Sorry Mom" and in 2020, she released her second called, "Depression." Many people in her community were touched by the messages in the songs.
