I Would Do Anything For Them

This video follows Chris Espericueta's journey from becoming an uncle at age twelve to embracing the role as a lifelong commitment rooted in love, responsibility, and guidance. Through reflections from both the uncle and his niece, the story shows how uncles step in as steady, caring figures—offering support during hard moments and everyday kindness through simple routines. Together, their voices highlight how these bonds shape children’s sense of safety, trust, and belonging.

I was twelve years old when I became an uncle, and at first I was really nervous because it’s a lot of responsibility to help someone become a person—help them become a good person. It felt like a lot of pressure at first. But now, when I look at them, I can say that I love them and I would do anything for them.

For me, being an uncle is a lot like being a father in a way. You have to look after your nieces and nephews like you would a son or daughter. You have to be responsible. I always try to give them the best advice I can and take care of them. I think about how my uncle treated me, and I try to treat them the same way—or even better. He always took me to the movies and bought me toys when he could, so I try to do at least that much for them.

Chris Espericueta is a filmmaker and photographer that currently works in partnership with his sister Miracle to produce films about race and identity.
