Niibin Headbird-Garza

photographer / filmmaker / teaching artist

BIOGRAPHY

Niibin Headbird-Garza is a dedicated digital artist, educator, and proud member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota. A mother of four—one son and three daughters—Niibin brings her deep commitment to family, culture, and creativity into every aspect of her work. She is the oldest and only daughter in her family, a role that has shaped her sense of responsibility and strength.

Niibin’s journey with digital arts began in 1999 when she was introduced to In Progress through Four Directions Charter School. Her first project—a deeply personal piece centered on her son—ignited a lifelong passion for photography and visual storytelling. Since then, she has become a skilled practitioner in photography and digital design, using her art as a means to honor her family and cultural heritage.

As a teaching artist, Niibin has spent decades mentoring youth across Minnesota. She is deeply committed to using photography and video as tools for self-expression and empowerment. Her greatest joy comes from watching students discover their voices through creative media. She takes pride in seeing her students not only develop their technical skills but also grow in confidence and purpose—many of whom go on to continue working with In Progress or pursue careers in the arts.

Niibin believes that photography is more than just a visual medium—it’s a form of memory keeping. She is especially passionate about restoring and reimagining black-and-white images of ancestors by adding color and modern design elements, a practice that connects younger generations with their heritage and loved ones who have passed on.

Her goal is to continue growing as an artist and educator. She hopes to further deepen her skills in photography, digital design, and video editing software such as iMovie, so she can bring even more to her students and community in the years to come.
