BIOGRAPHY
Felipe Hernandez is a dedicated photographer, cultural advocate, and community leader based in Crookston, Minnesota. He began his journey in photography in 1996 when he joined In Progress’s Fresh Voices program—a platform that nurtures emerging artists in rural communities. Through photography, Felipe found a way to express his experiences as a long-time resident of Crookston, using the camera to document issues of race, culture, and identity in his community.
Over the past two decades, Felipe has remained a core participant in the Fresh Voices program, evolving from student to mentor and leader. His passion for the arts and commitment to community building led him to take on the role of Site Coordinator for Fresh Voices in 2015. In this role, he has been instrumental in organizing workshops, mentoring young artists, and curating exhibitions that reflect the lived experiences of Crookston’s diverse population.
Felipe’s deep involvement in the program has also become a family legacy. His children, Heaven and Junior, are active participants in Fresh Voices, continuing the tradition of creative expression and cultural storytelling through photography and digital media.
Whether behind the lens or in front of a classroom, Felipe is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices and fostering a culture of inclusion through the arts. His work reflects both personal and collective histories, grounded in a sense of place, family, and cultural pride.
