Nigigoonsikwe Humphrey

Biography
Nigigoonsikwe Humphrey is a developing media artist and storyteller who began creating at the age of nine. She currently lives in Cass Lake, Minnesota, and attends the Niigaane Immersion Language Program at the Bug O Nay Ge Shig School, where she is actively engaged in language preservation and cultural expression through the arts.
Rooted in her Ojibwe heritage, Nigigoonsikwe brings a strong sense of identity and purpose to her creative work. She is a member of the Niigaane Bindamoo Makak (Niigaane Radio), a five-member student production team that produces digital content for and by young people. Through this initiative, she has helped develop podcasts and multimedia stories that uplift Indigenous voices and promote Anishinaabe language and culture.
In addition to her school-based projects, Nigigoonsikwe has deepened her artistic skills through mentorship with In Progress, where she has served as a peer mentor since 2024. Her interests have expanded into music production, audio storytelling, and photography—mediums she uses to explore her identity, honor her community, and preserve oral traditions in new, digital forms.
Qualifications
Nigigoonsikwe has developed strong skills in DSLR photography, capturing both portraits and environmental images that reflect her culture and surroundings. She is also trained in cinematic video camera operation and basic post-production techniques. As a member of Niigaane Radio, she has gained experience in podcast development, audio editing, and collaborative storytelling. Her recent work with In Progress has included mentoring younger artists and contributing to digital projects that support Indigenous youth expression and leadership.
