BIOGRAPHY

Ilima Lewis is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Twin Cities whose work centers on storytelling, emotional exploration, and the creation of immersive, sensory experiences. Raised as an army child, Ilima moved frequently throughout their upbringing, developing a deep awareness of impermanence and adaptability. This sense of fluidity has shaped their perspective on identity, community, and belonging, influencing their experiences across education, spirituality, and their journey of understanding their queer identity.

At the core of Ilima’s practice is a commitment to examining emotions and experiences that are often considered uncomfortable or taboo. Through their work, they seek to unpack these complexities and translate them into atmospheric experiences for audiences. Storytelling has been a constant throughout their life, beginning in early childhood with imaginative narratives that explored themes of misunderstanding and marginalization.

Over time, Ilima expanded their storytelling into songwriting and poetry, using sound and language as tools for emotional processing and expression. This evolution led them to explore visual mediums, including photography and video, where they began capturing real-life moments and personal narratives with the same depth and sensitivity.

Ilima’s practice is guided by a desire to create work that resonates on an emotional level while encouraging reflection and openness. By integrating writing, sound, and visual storytelling, they aim to craft experiences that invite audiences into new ways of feeling and understanding. Through their work, Ilima seeks to leave people with a renewed sense of curiosity, a deeper connection to the complexities of human experience, and a sense of hope that persists even in the face of uncertainty.
