It’s All About Listening
Bienvenida Matias reflects on being an auntie—or titi—as a role defined by care, honesty, and deep involvement across generations and distance. Through memories of migration, chosen family, and moments of stepping in during times of need, the speaker describes aunties as co-mothers and trusted confidants who offer guidance, boundaries, and safe haven. The story affirms that being an auntie is intuitive, enduring, and rooted in showing up when it matters most.
I happen to be a great, great auntie. In Spanish, I'm a Titi. What I love about being an auntie is that it's not just about spoiling them, but it's, you know, listening to them, it's seeing how they're growing up. It's knowing them, going through wonderful stages, difficult stages.
Throughout her career, Matias has held key leadership roles that have shaped the independent film landscape. She is a founding member and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), where she has been a driving force for supporting Latino creators and building professional networks. She has also served as Executive Director for both the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF) and the Center for Arts Criticism, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering rigorous dialogue around the arts.
A committed mentor, Matias has guided many emerging documentary filmmakers. She created the NALIP NY Documentary Mentoring Program to expand professional opportunities and strengthen storytelling in underrepresented communities. She has also taught in the Film and Media Studies Department at Hunter College, demonstrating her commitment to education and the next generation of filmmakers. Currently, she is producing For the Record: World War II in Guam with Frances Negrón-Muntaner, a documentary examining the Japanese occupation of Guam—a U.S. territory in the Pacific—during World War II.
