We Are The Village
Dave Nelson reflects on how aunts and uncles form the backbone of the village that helps raise children across generations. Through personal stories, the speaker shares how guidance, accountability, and hard-earned life lessons are passed down, shaping younger family members in ways parents cannot always do alone. The story comes full circle to show how collective care, support, and love create resilient families and lasting bonds.
It takes a village to raise a child, and aunts and uncles are the population of that village. I should point out that if it weren’t for this village, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to be an uncle today. I discovered I had a whole other family that I didn’t even know about, and it was one of the most exciting moments of their lives to suddenly have a big brother.
Now my niece has children of her own, so I’m a great-uncle. At first, we were disappointed because she was young and we were afraid. But again, it came down to that same village. She had a lot of support. Everyone was willing to help, and everything turned out well. They’re a happy family, and I have the privilege of being the fun uncle.
Dave Nelson lives in Crookston Minnesota and works with Keri Pinna in support the DCMJ non-profit group. He is an artist, a collector and an overall good and kind person.
