Lori VANG

multidisciplinary artist

BIOGRAPHY

Based in Mni Sota Makoce—the homeland of the Dakota and Anishinaabe people—Lori Vang is an artist, storyteller, and community-based creative from the Hmong American community. As a second-generation immigrant, her work explores cultural and spiritual identity through lived experience. Lori creates across digital media and hands-on practices, including video production using platforms such as YouTube, Canva, and CapCut, as well as fiber arts like crochet and cross-stitch, and mixed-media work. Across these forms, she engages themes of creativity, joy, vulnerability, faith, and belonging. Lori believes art functions not only as expression, but as a language that holds truth, invites reflection, and fosters connection across differences.

Lori’s connection to In Progress is grounded in her belief in the transformative power of storytelling to shape communities and challenge dominant narratives. Her background in youth development, facilitation, and community organizing informs her approach to both artmaking and service. She has led initiatives such as the Frogtown Neighborhood Justice Tour, a walking experience designed to introduce youth to local organizations working toward community well-being. She has also helped organize events that connect young people with community and social justice leaders, supporting their growth as emerging changemakers. Through her work, Lori is committed to creating spaces where individuals feel seen, validated, and empowered to share their stories and speak from their own lived experiences.
