BIOGRAPHY
Michelle Vohs, who also works under the name Michelle Mei, is a South Minneapolis–based photographer creating on Dakhóta Oyáte land. She is dedicated to capturing community stories as they are lived, with a focus on portrait and documentary-style photography. Drawn to the medium from an early age, she has continued to develop her craft from young adulthood into her current work, focusing on real moments and the beauty of everyday life. She is engaged in expanding her practice while deepening her connections within community-centered creative spaces such as In Progress.
As a Chinese woman of color, Michelle is driven by a desire to preserve stories that have historically gone undocumented, particularly within immigrant and refugee communities. Recognizing that many families lack access to photographs due to displacement, war, and separation, she views photography as a means of reclaiming and rebuilding visual legacies. Her work creates space to honor origins while celebrating the present, offering images that can be cherished, shared, and passed down, capturing not only individuals, but also resilience, connection, and collective success.
Her creative process is grounded in storytelling and reflection, aiming to create images that feel timeless while also offering people a genuine and affirming representation of themselves and their relationships. As she continues to grow professionally, Michelle remains intentional about working with clients who reflect the diversity of the communities she serves.
