James Yang

podcaster / music artist

BIOGRAPHY

James Yang is an emerging artist and creative based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. After graduating from college, he entered a period of reflection and uncertainty, questioning what direction his life should take. Through that introspection, he realized that fulfillment, not expectation, needed to guide his path. Art became the vehicle for that shift. Determined to pursue work that felt meaningful, James began building a podcast platform as a way to explore ideas, identity, and lived experience.

His introduction to In Progress came after participating in music sessions with a friend who was already involved in the organization. Discovering a space that actively supports artists in telling their own stories resonated deeply with him. Through mentorship at In Progress, James committed to investing in his growth by expanding his technical skills and creative range across multiple mediums.

James co-founded a podcast team and immersed himself in studying podcast production, narrative structure, and audio storytelling. His podcast centers on empowerment and generational dialogue, particularly for young people navigating identity within immigrant households. Growing up in a first-generation immigrant family, he experienced tension between personal aspirations and cultural expectations. Rather than allowing judgment or restriction to define him, James developed a strong sense of autonomy and peace. His platform aims to create space for others to feel heard, validated, and encouraged to take ownership of their own lives.

At its core, James’s work is about voice—reclaiming it, strengthening it, and amplifying it for those who may feel unheard. He hopes his message reaches individuals who are searching for permission to define success and fulfillment on their own terms.
