BIOGRAPHY

Timothy Young is a multidisciplinary visual artist, writer, and mentor whose creativity formed the core of his identity, even from early childhood. Drawing, imagining, and making things were natural ways for Timothy to understand the world around him.

After completing his studies at art school in Detroit, where he initially focused on photography, Timothy relocated to Grand Marais, Minnesota, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It was there—after his formal training—that he discovered his authentic artistic voice. Surrounded by the natural landscape and the contemplative pace of the region, he began developing a more personal and intuitive approach to artmaking. This period marked a turning point, allowing him to move beyond technical instruction and toward a deeper exploration of creativity and meaning.

Timothy’s creative philosophy centers on observation, memory, and the unpredictable nature of imagination. He writes extensively about his artistic process on his blog, describing it as “fishing in a stream of consciousness,” where ideas emerge unexpectedly from lived experiences and latent memories.

Although Timothy is primarily recognized as an acrylic painter, his practice spans a wide range of mediums. His artistic work includes digital art, drawing, comic illustration, video, and pottery.

Beyond his personal practice, Timothy has devoted more than three decades to mentoring young artists. Through multiple arts organizations along the North Shore of Lake Superior, he has guided teenagers in discovering their own creative voices and building confidence through artistic exploration. His dedication to mentorship reflects his belief that art is not only a personal pursuit but also a powerful tool for community growth and self-discovery.
