BIOGRAPHY
Ze Thao Sengsoulichanh (she/they) is a 1.5-generation Hmong-American refugee, multimedia artist, and cultural worker whose storytelling is deeply rooted in themes of diaspora, identity, and intergenerational memory. Born into the legacies of war, displacement, and survival, Ze brings a rich, nuanced voice to the evolving narrative of Hmong and Southeast Asian American life. Their creative practice spans podcasting, video, writing, and spoken word—each serving as a vessel to reclaim indigenous wisdom and elevate the multiplicity within Hmong cultural identity.
In 2018, Ze co-founded Mango & Peppers, a podcast she co-hosts with longtime friend and collaborator Dee Pha. The show serves as a digital gathering space, exploring topics such as Hmong American identity, Asian diaspora experiences, gender and queerness, current events, and community healing. With candor and heart, Mango & Peppers has grown into a cherished storytelling platform that offers laughter, insight, and cultural reflection for a growing community of listeners.
Ze’s storytelling work is motivated by a desire to illuminate often-overlooked narratives within the Hmong and Asian American experience. Her practice includes zine-making, filmmaking, and collaborative editing, with an emphasis on preserving oral histories and honoring intergenerational knowledge. Among her notable contributions is the Hmonglish Dictionary zine—a playful and poignant take on hybrid language and identity—and her editorial work with Planting SEADS: Southeast Asian Diaspora Stories, a literary and visual arts anthology capturing stories across Southeast Asian communities.
Whether behind a camera, a microphone, or a pen, Ze is committed to creating intentional space for healing, expression, and transformation. Her art is both a mirror and a bridge: reflecting back the truth of lived experience, and building pathways for connection across generations and cultural borders.
