The Independent Artist

deepeinging

The Independent Artist offers a series of activities designed to support artists in deepening the content of their work while strengthening their ability to navigate professional and creative ecosystems. Centered on critique, dialogue, and peer exchange, the series creates space for artists to refine their ideas, receive critical feedback, and build meaningful connections with others in the field.

Participants will engage with established artists who share insights into sustaining a practice over time, navigating authorship and ownership, and building networks that support both creative growth and long-term opportunity.

Please note that some of these activities are still pending coordination of presenters. If you register for upcoming sessions - we may need to notify you about scheduling changes.

  • This artist talk series brings together photographers whose work confronts social unrest, systemic discrimination, and the realities of immigrant detainment and deportation. Through image-making and lived experience, these artists examine the role of photography as both witness and intervention—challenging dominant narratives and amplifying truths often pushed to the margins. Each conversation centers on the responsibility and risk of documenting upheaval, and the power of visual storytelling to hold institutions accountable while honoring the humanity of those most impacted.

    2026 Presenting Artists include:

    • Xavier Tavera

    • Chris Juhn

    • KingDemetrius Pendleton
