Read Brave is currently seeking 20 people to participate in an afternoon portraiture session for the Joy of Being Exhibit Series - taking place as part of the Read Brave Series.

Read Brave is an annual, citywide reading program that uses the power of books to bring people together—across similarity and difference—to read and talk bravely with one another and to think of big ideas that move Saint Paul forward. We live in a world facing many challenges, especially affecting those who are most vulnerable in our communities. It's a time for us to reconnect with our humanity and recognize how we depend on each other. It is also a time to celebrate and own who we are and the complexities of how we relate to each other. This connection generates a sense of pride in who we are and supports us as we dig into the complexities of who we are, how we relate each other, and what it means to create a city where all identities belong. Understanding that our happiness is untouchable and plentiful becomes a powerful way to resist. Every action in this exhibit is a tribute to our existence.

This exhibit is a collaboration between the Saint Paul Public Library, In Progress, and Transforming Generations. It aims to honor the ways joy is sourced, nurtured, and shared within the resilient LGBTQIA2+ BIPOC communities of the Twin Cities."

The Independent Photographer presents 4 emerging artists over the course of the year in solo exhibits. Each artist have received mentorship and professional development guidance in past years but have yet to present a solo exhibit. Selected artists receive mentorship in curatorial practice and are actively involved in the planning process of their own exhibit. A reception and artist talk for each artist will also take place.

This session will provide specific instruction in how to light and photograph products for sale. The session will review table top photography techniques, lighting and what types of lenses work best for this work. This is a hands-on session, that takes participants through a variety of aspects of product based photography.

This session provides instruction and practice in the art of the individual portraiture. From headshots, to actor/model portfolio, senior photos etc…. there are varying techniques and approaches artists should gain comfort with in order to get it right and honor the person being photographed.

PRACTICE

Participants put to work what they have learned by setting up different photographic stations and begin photographing volunteer models. The group will rotate head shots stations, formal portraiture, and more.

CAMERAS &LENSES

Hands on instruction in the art photographing with different cameras & lenses. Includes discussion regarding what types of cameras and lenses are available through In Progress and how artists can build their own set of photo related resources.

LIGHTING

Hands on instruction in the art photographing with studio lights. Session includes technical overview, discussion regarding what types of lights are available, and how artists can build their own set of lighting resources.

BACKDROPS

Hands on instruction in the art photographing with backdrops. Session includes technical overview, discussion regarding what types of backdrops are available, and how artists can build their own set of backdrop resources.

Portraiture & Meaning offers insight into the art of portraiture. Artists Kazua Melissa Vang & Tomas Leal will show examples of how they approach photography and highlight the differences between commercial, independent and fine art approaches. This session will set the stage for those wanting to master the art of portraiture. A light meal will be provided for this session.
